One of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer of 2022 has been the request by Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Manchester United.
Ronaldo pressed for a transfer away from United because he wants to play for a Champions League-bound team.
The 2-1 loss at home to Brighton on the first day of the season has likely exacerbated Cristiano’s fears about ManUtd’s potential to contend for titles this year.
The 37-year-old started that game on the bench after acting inexcusably this summer.
Ronaldo left the Man Utd preseason tour early due to family obligations, and he also left during the half of the friendly match against Rayo Vallecano.
Ronaldo wants to leave Manchester United for a second reason, though, and that is because the offensive players around him are in appalling shape.
In spite of the supporting cast abjectly failing to assist him in any manner, Ronaldo managed to score a beautiful 24 goals in all competitions last season.
The form of Ronaldo’s teammates in attack, Marcus Rashford has gone 13 games without scoring or setting up a goal for Manchester United. He last assisted the team on February 12. His last goal came 16 games ago in January.
Since February, Bruno Fernandes has also failed to setting up a goal for Manchester United. In his last 13 games, he has scored just one goal (against Brentford) with no assists.
Jadon Sancho was Man Utd’s big signing last season ago, but he finished a disastrous debut year. In his last seven games, going back to March, he has failed to score or provide an assist.
In fact, he went without scoring or providing an assist for Manchester United in the months of August, September, October, December, January, April, and May of last season. He only contributed to goals in three of the season’s nine months.
Anthony Elanga, another highly regarded attacking youth, saw a lot of action in the second part of the previous campaign.
However, he has demonstrated that he is not yet ready by failing to score for Man Utd since February despite playing in 13 games during that time. In 22 games, he has just two assists.
Anthony Martial, who is returning, comes last. With only five league goals over the previous two seasons, his performance was appalling.
He spent the second half of the season on loan at Sevilla, but he failed to score in La Liga, so he has no league goals in 2022. (he did score once in the Europa League in February).
He has scored one goal and provided one assist so far this year, both in February. In fact, during the past Eleven months, he has only contributed to two club goals and one assist.
Ronaldo’s desire to go is understandable given the awful form of the attacking players and attackers around him.
