Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio, according to a report.
Erik ten Hag, who is overhauling the playing squad at Old Trafford, is still looking to improve United’s side as the transfer window nears its conclusion next week. The Dutchman wants to bring in several more fresh faces to his team.
Asensio has informed the European champions that he wants to leave the team, per Relevo via Football Espana, and manager Carlo Ancelotti of Real Madrid has made it clear that this is the case.
Several English and Italian clubs are reportedly interested in the 26-year-old, with United leading the pack.
This transfer season, United has already added four players, led by the Brazilian Casemiro, who joined the team in a £70 million deal from Madrid last week.
In quest of first-team minutes, Asensio is currently aiming to follow his old teammate out the door, and Old Trafford may be a potential stop.
Marco is considering his options, according to Ancelotti, who was named UEFA’s men’s coach of the year yesterday. “If he stays, he will definitely be a Madrid player.”
Asensio’s current deal has just one year left, so Madrid might be eager to cash in now rather than take the chance of losing him for nothing in the next summer.
Since signing from Mallorca in 2014, he has made 236 appearances for the club, scoring 49 goals and taking home five Champions League crowns.
He has recently struggled for playing time at the Bernabeu, but he still wants to advance in his career and has a number of possibilities for doing so.
The club recently increased its interest in Ajax forward Antony after being linked with players like Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic, Memphis Depay, and Cody Gakpo.
United has been looking for a forward throughout the transfer window. Although Antony is their top priority, they still have room to grow.
Asensio may also enter the building the following week because the Red Devils are apparently willing to pay up to £25.3 million for him.
