Insecury: Voter Registration Remains Suspended In Imo, INEC Slam’s Uzodimma; The Independent National Electoral Commission has slam’s Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, for claims that it had proceeded the Nonstop Voter Registration in places where the exercise was before suspended in Imo State Nigeria.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, in a statement on Tuesday, said the commission’s position hadn’t changed.
The commission had suspended the CVR exercise in all the 54 fresh centres created to grease the enrollment of choosers across the state following an attack on its staff members in Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area, and reports of instability in other corridor of the state.
Uzodimma had on Sunday claimed, during a church service at the Government House Tabernacle, Owerri, that INEC had agreed to lift the suspense, adding that the CVR would commence on Monday, April 25, 2022.
The governor was quoted as saying that his intervention came necessary to allow Imo citizens to register and gain their Permanent Voter Cards before the coming general election.
But Okoye claimed that the exercise was till confined to the commission’s state and original government area services except in Orsu, Njaba and Ihitte Uboma Local Government Areas where it’s suspended indefinitely.
Okoye engaged general society to disapprove the implied resumption of the CVR in the three LGAs of Orsu, Njaba and Ihitte Uboma.
He said, “ While the commission isn’t ignorant of the imperative of giving every eligible Nigerian the occasion to register and bounce in unborn choices, the safety and security of citizens involved in the exercise is a consummate concern.
“ Similar statements are able of misleading the public and farther jeopardising the safety of registrants and officers as well as the security of the commission’s installations.
“ At the applicable time, the commission will advertise any new decision on the matter after discussion with the security agencies and critical stakeholders.
