Gianna, George Floyd 6-year-old daughter, has been given a full scholarship to Texas Southern University (TSU) in Houston, Texas, where she will study.
George Floyd died as a result of a police officer kneeling on his neck, preventing him from breathing, leaving Gianna Floyd and her mother in a state of mourning. Global indignation over his death gave rise to the BlackLivesMatter movement.
Many people in the US and throughout the world expressed their condolences to George Floyd’s family, particularly his wife and their 6-year-old daughter Gianna. Gianna, however, will receive a full scholarship from Texas Southern University (TSU) if she chooses to enroll.
A news release from TSU’s Board of Regents stated that they had “authorized a fund to give a full scholarship for Floyd’s adored daughter, Gianna… if she decides to join the University.”
The Board emphasized that by giving Gianna a scholarship, they were paying tribute to George Floyd’s legacy and ensuring her financial future.
The Board Chairman, Albert H. Myres, said in the statement, “This Board is committed to education and knows that a college degree is one of many powerful steps toward a productive and successful life.”
Gianna who dreams of becoming a Doctor explained that she wishes to help people holding the inspiration of her father who has helped the world to become better. “I know what I want to be when I grow up. A doctor. So I can help people,” Gianna told GMA.
Gianna also earned a number of scholarships, including a portion of Kanye West’s $2 million gift to the Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Ahmaud Arbery families. She was also given a privately sponsored scholarship by the Texas State University (TSU) Foundation.
The TSU Foundation is pleased to award Ms. Floyd this privately sponsored scholarship. We are aware of the importance of education in the search for answers and generational advancement. The TSU Foundation’s Gerald Smith remarked, “We are eager to welcome her into the TSU family.
Gianna, who is eager to uphold her father’s legacy, asserted that her father altered the course of history. She remarked, “Daddy changed the world.”
