Oluwafunmilayo Oni, a smart Nigerian lady, knocked out 51840 other applications to become one of the 2% selected to receive the Chevening Scholarships from the United Kingdom.

With a second-class lower Bachelor’s degree diploma, Oluwafunmilayo not only got the UK Government Chevening Scholarship Award, but she also received the Irish Government Scholarship at the same time.

Oluwafunmilayo posted about her accomplishment on LinkedIn, stating that she had previously doubted her potential to obtain any scholarships due to the grade she received for her bachelor’s degree.

For years, I doubted my ability to bag any scholarship for my Master’s degree because many scholarships granting organizations often stated clearly that they would rather a minimum of 2:1 (second-class upper),” she wrote on LinkedIn.

She recalled that she once applied for a scholarship opportunity and was told that her leadership experience was superb and excellent but she did not meet the academic criteria because of her Bachelor’s degree grade.

However, she did not relent on her applications and strive to make an impact in the world. After several attempts, she was awarded two scholarships on the same day.

This year, I was awarded the Chevening Scholarship and the Irish Aid scholarship on the same day. See God!” she wrote.

She said that she would have to turn down one scholarship because she was unable to accept both for her Master’s program overseas. “I must now select 1.”

It hurts me that I have to let one of them go even if they are both fully funded and have a variety of chances, she said.

She urged university grads with lower-class degrees to not be disheartened by their outcomes but to persevere and show the world their excellent.

The journey can be a little harder if you have a 2:2 like I do, but the world is your oyster! Apply!”
